Competition between insurers has been limited
Spent: 29 July 2005 07.46 AMSTERDAMS - the life
insurers in the Netherlands conduct mutually but a restricted
concurrentieslag. The wrapped insurance products are difficult
understand for the consumer, who cannot make as a result the best
choice. Also the high profit figures of Dutch insurers give an
indication of restricted competition. That letter the economen
J. Bikker and M. van Leuvensteijn in the youngest editie of the
profession booklet ESB, which was published Friday. Bikker work
at the Nederlandsche bank, Van Leuvensteijn has been linked to the
central plan office. From their research becomes clear that the
Dutch insurers between 1996 and 2003 signaling higher profit forks
have gained then their competitors in important European countries
such as France, Germany and Great Britain. The Dutch twisted
both worldwide and in own country better profits. Bikker and Van
Leuvensteijn indicate that the profit figures say exclusively
something concerning the competition in the past years. Also
they only put that to the research an average picture gives of the
market for life insurances in the Netherlands. The authors see,
however, clear indications that sale is by means of insurance
commission agents insufficiently transparent. The trust
authority has earlier also already warned NMa for bad market forces as
a result of the strong financial links between insurers and commission
agents. (c) DUTCH PRESS AGENCY
