Grootegast offer edible extraatje to armlastige inhabitant
GROOTEGAST - groningse borough Grootegast repairs an old
tradition in ere. The municipality offers armlastige inhabitants
to Wednesday afternoon a free herring. The tradition descends
already 1476, but the last years by increasing the herring prices had
become obsolete.
The herring distribution takes place traditionally on Wednesday
for Easter. Ceramics was established by certain Menno Jeltema.
This schonk groningse pepper guest house, an ecclesiastical
nursing home, at the end of the fifteenth century some plots country.
If condition put Jeltema the sempiternal obligation that annual
under the poor of the villages Niekerk, Oldekerk and Faan a barrel
herring had be distributed.
The protection of the pepper guest house has stuck age-long to
this tradition. In 1979, the obligation was abolished: on
the one hand because the villages no real poor knew more, on the other
side because the herring prices had increased enormously with respect
to 1476th end years ninety a foundation have been formed which wants
the tradition repair in ere.
The herring is provided Wednesday by valid farmer hamper.
The carriage starts its rondtocht along the three villages at
noon at four o'clock in Faan. For half five the herring arrives
at the reformed church of Niekerk.
